Plastic Abodes combined sculpture, performance, and video to probe the bonds and borders between living bodies and nonliving environments. By exploring the integration of mechanical automation and choreographed human performance I am continuing the evolution of my dance-driven practice – working Butoh backwards, as it were, from material towards body. I have been preoccupied by the in-betweenness of much that we locate, culturally, in the bifurcated categories of natural or unnatural -- by the unnaturalness of the natural and the naturalness of the unnatural -- and this preoccupation is finding expression in speculative design, sculptural metaphor, performance theatre, and object theatre. I don’t intend to convey a simple environmental slogan or theme but instead to leave my audience sensitized to the complexities, perversities, and profundities of our relations with the built and natural environments.
